This week the spotlight is shining on Freya aka @allaboutautism_.
When I announced that I was starting this section shining the spotlight Freya @allaboutautism_ reached out to me asking to be featured and how could I possibly say no.
Who is Freya?
Freya is a 17 year old girl who lives in Co.Mayo, Ireland with her parents and 2 brothers, Tuan and Dian.
Why do you have a passion for Autism?
My youngest brother Dian has autism and I would love to work with children with autism when I’ve finished school.
Can you tell us about All-About-Autism?
All About Autism started in November 2015. I wrote 2 booklets, All About Autism and All About Autism Children’s Activity Book. All About Autism is for adults and talks about how autism can affect someone’s senses, the way they play and their view on the world. It also includes examples and tips throughout to help further your understanding. All About Autism Children’s Activity Book tells the story of a young boy from his family’s perspective. The child can colour the pages as they read the story. There’s also puzzles and a certificate at the end of the book. After a year, I decided to start a blog. On this blog, I share personal experiences, tips, tutorials, products and services that have benefited Dian. I also allow people to use it as a platform to share their stories.
What has been the world’s reception of All-About Autism?
All About Autism has a got a very positive response. People have messaged me telling me that the services and products I’ve recommended have helped their child and I love receiving messages like that. Families and communities have found the booklets to be very informative and schools have purchased large quantities of them to use in school.
What are projects you are working on?
I’ve a few blog post ideas I am working on including an interview with a girl who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 20. I try to make sure that my blog posts can benefit and help other autism families.
What would you like the world to know about autism?
Autism is not something to fear, it’s not the end of the world, it’s not a disease or a bad thing. It’s just the way someone views the world differently than you.
What has been your greatest achievements so far?
I’ve won 8 awards since starting All About Autism. It was never about making money or winning things when I started All About Autism. It was always about creating a better understanding of autism and acceptance in communities but to win all these wonderful awards has shown me that what I am doing is working and people have noticed that. I think my greatest achievement so far though is that I’ve helped my family and others just like mine. I never thought I’d be able to achieve that before. I’ve worked in special schools and autism units and I’ve learnt so much. Being able to pass on advice and tips to other autism families has been the best thing about All About Autism.
