The Power of the Tongue

James 3:5-6

Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.

See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

Proverbs 18:21

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

One of the things I have paying extra attention to in this season is the words that I speak  to other people, the words that I speak over them whether in serious or playful conversation. Sometimes we think that negative confession only applies to our personal lives but it also applies to the words we speak to other people. For example someone tells you their plans and you begin to question the plans by saying “will that really work, why don’t you try this or that, have you spoken to someone else?” That’s not speaking life into the situation, that’s planting seeds of doubt, that’s planting negativity in that situation.

The tongue is a small member of the body as the Bible says but it can either build or destroy. The tongue can either bring life or kill.

I no longer want to use my tongue to speak negative things into people’s lives. Of course I am a work in progress and I will stumble and fall BUT I am making the conscious decision that from now on I will speak nothing but life in people’s lives and if I have doubts about something, I will present it to the Lord instead of planting seeds of doubt in the person.

  1. I quite agree with you on how best to use the tongue. I usually tell friends that, its good to be frank in expressing our views on issues but we need to be cautious so we do not end up breaking other people’s spirit with our choice of words.
“Be frank but don’t break down people”.
