Life, Zimbabwe Disability

It’s that time of the year again when we celebrate all things disability. I would say it’s that time of the year when the world over celebrates people with disabilities but we all know that’s a lie. The day often comes and goes just like any other day on the calendar, in fact I would bet majority of the world does not even know the existence of this day. I wasn’t going to write anything about the day. I asked myself what is the point, does anyone care, who will read it? Then someone said to me “Dec 4 2014 you knew Dec 3 2015 was coming can you please write that article already?” That was not the response I was looking for anyway here I am writing this post.

This year I have a simple messages which is

Dec 3 International Day of People with Disabilities. Theme: Inclusion Matters:access and empowerment of people of all abilities. People with disabilities are more disabled by societies that exclude them not so much the disabilities themselves. Excluded from conversations, decisions are made for us, everyone assumes they know what we want or need without consulting us. Children with disabilities are excluded from schools because society does not believe in educating them. Adults with disabilities are excluded from empowerment programs because society does not think to ever include us. People with disabilities always have to fight to be included even then society still does not believe we should be included. People with disabilities should not have to ask to be included, it is a basic human right that we MUST be included. Inclusion means that ALL people should freely &openly accommodate any person with a disability without restrictions of any kind. What are you doing to include people with disabilities in your world? You are either part of the problem or the solution. Disability can happen to anyone. Inclusion starts with you. Choose to be part of the solution, choose to be inclusive. ‪#‎IDPWD2015‬
