Recently I was discussing with a friend how it always seems like the same old popular people get recognition sometimes pretty much for nothing and other people such as her making a difference is people’s lives never get any mention at all. A few days after that a major breakthrough came through for her in her line of work. We were so amazed and in awe of this especially considering how this breakthrough came about. Anyway we began to reflect on how the breakthrough happened, someone who follows her Facebook page told someone else about the work she is doing and before you know it this person had made contact with my friend. The conclusion we came to was “when God has called you to do something, you don’t have to advertise yourself, God does all the work for you. He knows exactly where you are.”
This reminded me of the anointing of David in 1 Samuel 16.
1 Samuel 16:8-13
8 So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
David’s family did not even consider to invite him to the house when the prophet had arrived to anoint a king. He was forgotten. He was not included. He was only remembered after the prophet had asked if there was another son. It is only then was David invited to the house. David did not have to advertise himself, he did not have to ask where his invite was. He kept minding his business in the fields but God was working in the background. Now imagine the scene, his father Jesse would have probably sent his older sons to go fetch David from the fields, the very same sons he had thought one of them was going to be anointed king. How awesome is that, the whole time when Jesse had forgotten about little David, someone else not only KNEW and REMEMBERED him in the fields but made sure he was called to the house.
And that’s the same thing in our lives when we think other people are getting all the recognition, God is working in the background. Where people have looked at you and concluded not to include you, God is working in the background.
This week when it gets tough remember God knows EXACTLY where you are regardless of who notices you and who doesn’t.
“When God has called you to do something, you don’t have to advertise yourself, God does all the work for you. He knows exactly where you are.”
