The Great I Am

Exodus-3-14-Medium

Yesterday i woke up singing one of my favourite songs at the moment “The Great I Am” the chorus goes “You are the great I am that I am You’re the never changing God You remain the same From the rising of the sun To the going down of the same You’re God in all the earth.” It reminded me of Exodus 3:14.

Exodus 3:14

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

To set the scene, this is when God is speaking to Moses through a burning bush and He is commissioning him to go speak to the children of Israel who were working as slaves in Egypt. This is one of the verses i grew up hearing in Sunday school all the time but to be honest i never paid much attention to it till yesterday. As i was listening to this song “The Great I am” and paying close attention to the chorus, i found myself really meditating on this verse and in that moment i was like WOW WOW WOW i finally get it, i finally got what the verse means!!!!!! To illustrate what i mean, I’ll use this example. A well known influential director in a big company summons one of his employee  to his office and instructs him to go get him some lunch in the cafeteria downstairs but does not give him any money. The employee is puzzled and asks the director “who should i say has sent me?” The director replies “tell them it’s me of course, they know who i am.” Armed with just the director’s name, the employee makes his way to the cafeteria to get the lunch and upon arrival as soon as he says who sent him, the director’s lunch is immediately prepared for him. However the director’s name is only good in his company, it is limited to his company, if he was to ask the same employee to go to the cafeteria in the building next door, the director’s name will have no weight.

Now imagine this—> if God had replied saying I am so and so, that would have limited Him to just being just that right? By Him saying I AM WHO I AM means God has no limits, He has no boundaries, we cannot just limit Him to one thing and say He is this or He is that. God is who He says He is. Not only that  but He can be whomsoever you want Him to be, when you are sick He says I am the Lord your healer, when you are broke He says I will supply all your needs according to My riches in glory….How amazing is that !!!!!
