Whose voice will you believe?

Numbers 13: 30-33
30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the giants[d] (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

Numbers 14: 6-9
6 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’[a] 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.”

These two passages of scripture remind me of an incident that happened last week. One of my friends from uni told me wrong information with regards to certain changes currently taking place at my uni which caused me to panic a great deal because i thought these changes would impact on me finishing my course. I spent the rest of that day feeling stressed over the issue. The following day i then submitted the paperwork that was required to facilitate this change on my record, the very same paperwork that my friend had said would be rejected because the university had sent her a different email to what they told me. I am glad to say that half an hour later, i received a response from the uni informing me that the paperwork had been approved. I literally laughed at myself in this moment cause i felt so stupid, why because i had chosen to believe this negative talk coming from one person instead of me inquiring with the uni what the actual requirement was.

Isn’t it funny how we choose to believe other voices over the voice of God in our lives, over the voice of the Holy Spirit, over the voice of Jesus? We flood our minds with all sorts of voices that speak negative things into our lives and we wonder why we get stressed and cannot explain why we are stressed. There was a tv show i absolutely loved, i could not go a week without watching it and i even had a group chat with some of my friends to discuss the show. However in as much as i loved this show and it was just a tv show, there were certain issues being promoted in this show that i did not like at all. In fact i would get so worked up watching this show and when last season ended, i made the decision to stop watching it completely because it just wasn’t worth me exposing myself to it.

Going back to the above passages of scripture, here we see the children of Israel have sent out spies to spy out the land of Canaan. Only two out of the men that were sent out to spy the land of Canaan came back with a positive report, the other men were so afraid and negative which later caused so much panic in the Israelites and they began to cry. What is interesting to note is that at the beginning of Numbers 13 it says “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.” God had already given the land of Canaan into the hands of the children of Israel, they already knew the land was theirs for taking yet they chose to believe the negative report over what God had told them. This week whose voice are you going to believe in your life? Will you believe the voice of God over everything He is saying to you this week or will you choose to believe all the other negative voices? Believe God, believe His voice!
